The telc Język polski B1·B2 Szkoła exam is one of the most popular and most accessible certificate exams in Polish as a foreign language. What is the telc Polish language exam?
telc (The European Language Certificates) is a system of language exams developed by the German foundation telc gGmbH, a member of ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe). telc certificates are recognised worldwide by schools, universities, employers and public authorities as a reliable confirmation of language proficiency at all levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The Polish language exam is taken at the so-called dual B1–B2 level. This means you take one exam, and whether you receive a certificate at level B1 or B2 depends on the number of points you score in the individual parts. It is a convenient solution — you don't have to decide in advance which level to be tested at.
Structure of the telc B1–B2 Polish language exam
The exam consists of a written part and an oral part. Both parts include tasks at levels B1 and B2, so that the exam reliably measures your actual skills.
Written part (approx. 115 minutes, without a break):

Oral part (approx. 16 minutes): It usually takes place in pairs and is preceded by 20 minutes of preparation. The focus is on natural conversation and the exchange of opinions between candidates.
Important: the telc Polish language exam cannot be taken partially — you take the whole exam in one go. It is available in a paper-based and a hybrid format.
What does the telc certificate entitle you to? Recognition
Today the telc Polish language certificate has real, practical value in two key situations.
EU long-term resident status (level B1)
A telc Polish language certificate at level B1 or higher is one of the documents confirming the knowledge of Polish required to obtain an EU long-term resident permit. Legal basis: Regulation of the Minister of the Interior and Administration of 31 May 2023 (Journal of Laws 2023, item 1076).
Studies at Polish universities (level B2)
As of 31 July 2025, a telc Polish language certificate at level B2 confirms knowledge of Polish in the admission process for studies conducted in Polish. Legal basis: Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 30 July 2025 (Journal of Laws 2025, item 1045).
This means that a single exam can open the door both to legalising your stay and to starting studies in Poland.

Why choose the telc exam?
- Accessible format — a clear task structure and only one short text to write in the written part.
- Short waiting time — results together with the certificate usually take about 6–8 weeks.
- Intimate atmosphere — smaller groups of candidates than in many other exams, which reduces stress.
- Recognition — a document accepted by voivodeship offices and universities across Poland and recognised abroad.
- Two levels in one exam — you take it once and receive a B1 or B2 certificate.
Results and certificate
After the exam every candidate receives a document: a certificate (in the case of a positive result) or a results sheet/card. The level of the certificate (B1 or B2) depends on the points scored in the written modules and the oral exam. A condition for receiving the certificate is achieving at least level B1 in the oral part — candidates assessed below B1 do not receive a certificate. The telc certificate has no expiry date and is valid for life.
